Local Tikipunga Builders: Basement Conversion Project
The owners of this house in Tikipunga reached out to local Tikipunga builders, Breckon Builders, with a unique request. They wanted to transform the unused space beneath their home into a 30m² bedroom and ensuite. The challenge? The house was built on a steep hill with very limited access to the ground below, making the project both complex and rewarding.
As trusted local house builders, we began by installing supports to ensure the safety and stability of the house during the excavation. Once the house was securely propped up, the existing piles were carefully removed, and the ground beneath the home was dug out to create the space for the new room. Our experienced Whangarei residential builders then poured a solid concrete floor, providing a sturdy foundation for the project. Timber-framed walls were then erected to restore the structural support of the building, completing the transformation into a functional living space.
This project, like many of our builds, took about two months to complete. Sean Breckon, lead builder at Breckon Builders, described the process of developing the space underneath the house as ‘quite cool.’ However, it wasn’t without its challenges. Safely supporting the house while working on such a steep site required careful planning and precise execution. Due to the restricted access, all materials had to be transported down the hill using wheelbarrows, adding an extra layer of complexity to the job.
